Cubic cavity - mechanical and heat transfer modelling
NPL has patented a cubic cavity design and mounting arrangement which make the optical cavity stability highly insensitive to vibrations. It is uniquely robust, and its optical path length is stable to less than the diameter of an atomic nucleus.
During the 2020 lockdown, I carried out Finite Element Modelling for the National Physical Laboratory, using COMSOL Multiphysics.
In particular, I carried out Mechanical contact simulation to evaluate the clamping force required to maintain the cube in place, with minimum distubance to its optical properties.
I also run heat transfer simulation which account on the thermal radiation in space as well as the conductive path from the clamping mechanism to the cubic cavity
